They made the bronze basin and its bronze stand from the mirrors of the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting (Ex. 38:8 NIV).
You might ask, what do mirrors and basins have to do with missionary service? Everything!
The women in this passage had witnessed the glory of God on Mount Sinai, and they wanted to be near Moses and help in the building of the Tabernacle. When Moses asked them to voluntarily give their hand mirrors to make the wash basin, they said “yes.”
They had brought these mirrors from Egypt and once given away, there was no turning back. These women sacrificed their ability to see their reflection and all that that entails. They did what they knew should be done.
In a similar way, our CRI missionaries have also sacrificed to serve with us. They may not give away their hand mirrors, but in our modern world, to be a missionary means to many that they are out of touch with what is important in life—worldly success, a different career path, financial stability.
Everyone’s story is different and every sacrifice is personal, and like the women who gave up their mirrors in service to Him, our missionaries are following God’s call. They are doing what they know should be done—to share the light of Christ with the poor in Word and deed.
We hope that perhaps you may be willing to follow in the steps of the Tabernacle women and share a blessing with our people this Compassionate Christmas season.
With gratitude,
